SOUTHERN OHIO VETERANS MEMORIAL HIGHWAY RECOGNIZED BY ENR MAGAZINE AS WINNING MIDWEST REGION PROJECT

(New York) – Southern Ohio Veterans Memorial Highway (formerly the Portsmouth Bypass) in Ohio was recognized as the best project in the highways and bridge category for the Midwest by Engineering News Record (ENR) for 2019. The announcement was made as ENR unveiled the winners of its annual Best Project Awards across the country. As a regional winner for Best Project, Southern Ohio Veterans Memorial Highway will be considered for overall Project of the Year, which will be announced at an event in December.

Located just north of the Ohio-Kentucky border, the Southern Ohio Veterans Memorial Highway is a new four lane, 16-mile, divided, limited-access highway around the City of Portsmouth in Scioto County, Ohio. The new route bypasses 26 miles of US 52 and 23 through Portsmouth, providing an estimated travel time savings of 16 minutes per trip compared to the existing route. Financial Close was achieved on April 9, 2015, and groundbreaking occurred in June 2015. Substantial completion occurred ahead of schedule and on budget in December 2018, and the project opened to traffic shortly after. Final acceptance of the construction was reached in March 2019.
